Student casting their vote on the ballot box.

The excitement could be felt all through Sageland Elementary on Friday morning as students made their way to cast their votes in the MicroSociety building. On September 13th, 2024, the El Paso County Election Department arrived at Sageland ready to help 3rd to 5th grade students cast their votes on the STUCO elections. Scotties had the opportunity to vote using the same equipment grown ups use to vote in federal, state, and local elections. A total of 292 students were able to vote! Our younger Scotties were also part of the election process by casting their votes online.

All Scotties were able to cast an informed vote for their candidates because the Thursday before election day a live transmission of the debate was shown to all students. Candidates for mayor, executive assistant, and city manager talked about their skills, goals, and experience.

Special thanks to Mrs. Chavez and the El Paso County Election Department for making this election an unforgettable one!
